What If Consciousness Is Not What We Think It Is?

Close your eyes and notice the color red behind your eyelids, or the ache in your shoulder, or the taste still on your tongue. Something is happening — not just electrical activity, but an experience of electrical activity. Philosophers call this the "hard problem" of consciousness, and after more than a century of neuroscience, it remains exactly as hard as when Descartes first split mind from body.

This is not a niche academic puzzle. It is the question underneath every other question about who we are: whether free will is real, whether animals suffer the way we do, whether a sufficiently advanced machine could ever wake up. And the strange part is that we still cannot agree on what we are even looking for.

The Easy Problems and the Hard One

Philosopher David Chalmers drew a useful line in the 1990s between the "easy" problems of consciousness — explaining attention, memory, how the brain integrates sensory input — and the "hard" problem: explaining why any of that processing is accompanied by subjective experience at all. A system could, in principle, do all the easy things — detect light, categorize it, report on it — with nobody home. Philosophers call this hypothetical being a "philosophical zombie." The fact that we can even coherently imagine one is, for some thinkers, evidence that consciousness is not reducible to function.

Split-brain studies, beginning with the work of Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga in the 1960s, showed that when the connective tissue between the brain's two hemispheres is severed, each hemisphere can process information and even initiate behavior independently — sometimes producing what looks like two separate streams of awareness in a single skull.

That single set of experiments alone should make us uneasy about treating "consciousness" as one clean, unified thing. If it can, under the right surgical conditions, seemingly split into two, was it ever the indivisible inner light we assume it to be — or is it more like a process, a weather system, that we mistake for a solid object because language forces us to name it with a noun?

Three Competing Explanations

Broadly, the field clusters around three positions. Physicalism holds that consciousness simply is brain activity, fully explainable once neuroscience is complete — the feeling of "redness" is, in the end, nothing more than a pattern of neurons, even if we cannot yet describe the translation. Dualism, in one form or another, holds that experience is not reducible to physical processes at all, and that some further ingredient is needed. And a smaller but increasingly discussed position — panpsychism — proposes that some rudimentary form of experience is a basic feature of matter itself, present in some minimal way even in particles, and that what brains do is organize and amplify it rather than manufacture it from nothing.

💡 My Perspective

My interpretation of this is that the three camps are less far apart than they sound, because each one is really a confession about where our current concepts run out. Physicalists are betting that language and measurement will eventually catch up. Dualists are naming the gap rather than closing it. Panpsychists are trying to avoid a universe where experience appears from nowhere at some arbitrary threshold of complexity. None of these positions is embarrassing — they are what honest thinking looks like at the edge of what we can test.

Why the Question Resists Being Closed

Part of what makes consciousness so stubborn is that it is the one thing we cannot examine from the outside. Every other object of science — a star, a cell, a language — can in principle be observed by someone who does not have to be that object. Consciousness is the instrument doing the observing. We are trying to use the flashlight to see the flashlight.

We are not confused about consciousness because we lack data. We are confused because the thing doing the explaining and the thing being explained are the same thing.

🧪 Hypothesis

Here is a thought experiment, not a claim: what if subjective experience is not produced by the brain but filtered by it — the way a radio does not generate the broadcast but tunes into a signal already present? Under this hypothesis, damage to the brain would not "create less" consciousness but distort the reception, which is consistent with what we observe in injury and anesthesia without requiring experience to be manufactured from purely physical ingredients. This is a genuinely fringe idea in mainstream neuroscience and is presented here only as a speculative frame worth sitting with, not as a scientific claim.

What Is Actually at Stake

This is not an abstract parlor game. How we answer shapes how we treat animals, how we think about the moral status of an embryo or a patient in a persistent vegetative state, and what obligations — if any — we might one day owe to a machine that claims to feel something. Every one of those debates smuggles in an assumption about what consciousness is, usually without saying so.

It also shapes something quieter: how we treat our own minds. If experience is fragile, filtered, constructed moment to moment rather than a fixed possession, then attention itself becomes a kind of ethical practice — not because the metaphysics is settled, but because how we pay attention is one of the few parts of consciousness we can actually influence.

Where This Leaves Us

I do not think the hard problem gets solved by more precise brain scans alone, though they will keep narrowing what needs explaining. I think it gets circled, slowly, by philosophy, neuroscience, and contemplative traditions comparing notes honestly about where their models break down. The question "what is it like to be you" turns out to be one of the few questions in existence that cannot be answered by anyone but you — which may be the most important fact about it.

Why Did Humans Begin to Believe in Gods?

Roughly 100,000 years ago, someone in what is now Israel placed red ochre and shell beads into a grave at Qafzeh Cave. Ochre and beads have no nutritional or defensive value. Their presence in a burial is one of the earliest signals we have that a human being was thinking about death as something more than the end of a body — that there was an idea, however primitive, of a self that might need to be prepared for what came next.

That impulse — treating the dead as still mattering, imagining unseen agents who watch, judge, or intervene — shows up independently, over and over, in cultures that had no contact with one another. Anthropologists have found some version of ancestor worship, spirit belief, or deity worship on every inhabited continent. When a behavior is that universal and that costly (burial rites, temple-building, sacrifice), evolutionary and cognitive scientists start asking what it was doing for the people who practiced it.

The Cognitive Machinery Behind Belief

🔬 Evidence

Cognitive scientist Justin Barrett's research on what he termed the "Hyperactive Agency Detection Device" found that human minds are strongly biased toward assuming an event was caused by an intentional agent rather than a random one — a rustle in the grass is more often interpreted as "something" than "nothing," because in an ancestral environment, false positives (assuming a predator that isn't there) were far cheaper than false negatives (missing a predator that is).

That single bias, applied to a world full of unexplained events — drought, disease, lightning, dreams — naturally produces the sense that unseen agents are involved. You do not need a special "religion module" in the brain. You need ordinary threat-detection and social cognition applied to a universe that, before science, offered no other explanatory tools.

Religion as Social Glue

A second, complementary explanation comes from cultural evolution rather than individual cognition. Once human groups grew larger than the roughly 150-person band where everyone could personally verify everyone else's reputation, societies needed a way to enforce cooperation among strangers. A belief in watchful, moralizing gods — deities who punish cheaters even when no human is looking — turns out to be a remarkably effective solution to that problem.

Large-scale historical and cross-cultural research led by researchers such as Ara Norenzayan has found a correlation between the rise of "Big Gods" — moralizing, all-seeing deities — and the expansion of complex, cooperative societies. The causal arrow is debated, but the pattern is consistent: societies that scaled up successfully tended to also develop supernatural enforcement of moral norms.

💡 My Perspective

My interpretation is that both explanations are true at different altitudes. The cognitive bias explains why belief in agency is so easy for an individual mind to fall into. The social-cooperation account explains why certain kinds of belief — specifically moralizing, group-binding belief — were selected for and amplified at the level of entire societies over centuries. Religion, in this view, is not a mistake bolted onto an otherwise rational species. It is closer to a technology that early humans stumbled into and that helped some groups outcompete others, long before anyone could have designed it on purpose.

What This Does Not Explain

It is worth being honest about the limits of a functional account. Explaining why belief was useful to a group is not the same as explaining whether any particular belief is true, and it is not the same as explaining the deeply personal, transformative experiences that believers across traditions describe — states of awe, surrender, unity, or presence that feel, from the inside, nothing like a evolved cognitive bias. A functional theory of religion's origins and a claim about its ultimate truth are two separate questions, and collapsing them in either direction is intellectually lazy.

Explaining where a belief comes from is not the same as explaining it away.

🧪 Hypothesis

A speculative extension worth sitting with: if moralizing belief in unseen observers was partly what allowed human cooperation to scale past small tribes, then the rapid, historically recent decline of religious observance in some societies raises an open question — what, if anything, is replacing that function today? Surveillance technology, reputation systems, and algorithmic visibility are candidate substitutes that echo the same underlying structure: someone, or something, is always watching. This is offered as a pattern worth investigating, not an established finding.

A Question That Outlives Any One Answer

Whatever combination of cognition and culture set belief in motion tens of thousands of years ago, it produced something that still organizes billions of lives, governs law in many nations, and shapes how people grieve, marry, and hope. Understanding its origins does not resolve whether any tradition's specific claims about the universe are correct — that remains, as it always has, outside the reach of anthropology.
